Like a Fat Kid Loves Cake

Well HELLO there sugars.
Been a tad absent lately but hey! I'm a busy girl- what can I say?!
These days are just full of Red Bulls.. and emails.. and party planning and oh!
Highlights :)
Hashtag selfie.

I've also been makin a friggin heck ton of CAKES!
Birthday cakes, mustache cakes, gender reveal cakes..
Take a look see:

First was Kristen's friend's 40th Birthday cake.
LOVED the detail that I managed to pull off on the bottom tier
but the "40" on the top ? Not sure what I was thinking there...
it's lookin a bit like a NASCAR side panel if I do say so myself.

Thennnn was my sweet sisttaa from another misstaa,
Crystalynn's, 25th birthday cake.
I mustache you a question...

Last but certainly not least was Taylor's
little nugget's gender reveal cake!
I. Love. This. Idea.
I know it's not a new concept but this was definitely my first experience
and holy nerve wrecking.
Luckily the doctor was generous enough to not only clearly
write down the gender, but it was also appropriately colored with bright pink
jusssst in case.

It's a..
GIRL! :)
Taylor will be welcoming Miss Aubree Rae in about 4 months.

Needless to say I have been in baking mode and with Easter
this Sunday (yes people, it's already EASTER) I'm thinkin
that I'll whip up something festive. Yesssiirrr.

I leave you with this little gem.
And now you will all have that obnoxious little jingle stuck in your heads.

Eat the Damn Cupcake

Sometimes I go off on a rant, blabbing about
my weekend happenings, outfits, Pinterest, blah blah blaahh- but it's posts like these that remind you why my blog is titled Corin BAKES.
I believe baking is fun.
I believe cupcakes are exciting.
I believe...

Yes, even if that means spending hours on end in the gym
workin off that delicious 500 cal treat.
But that's just me :)

So Kristen from work- well, we call her Kiki but just to save
myself from telling a story behind the name- for time's sake, we'll stick to Kristen.
Kristen's son, Kohen, was celebrating his 5th birthday and
wanted to roll with the Star Wars theme.
I love jumping on the opportunity to make cakes and cupcakes
that aren't super girly- which is what I feel like I make 99.998% of the time.
[ie- Angry Bird or Ninjago cupcakes- both for my nephew]
So I was more than thrilled when she asked me to make
Kohen's Star Wars cake & cupcakes.

ENTER FONDANT..

You know how I just love playing with fondant.
Right? :)

I give you, the Star Wars cake:
French Vanilla with homemade cream cheese frosting!
MmmMM mmmm mmmm.

And we can't forget the light saber cupcakes that I was
mildly freaking out about!
Chocolate cupcakes, buttercream frosting, topped with candy-covered pretzel sticks.
I was like "Kiki are you suuuurrreee the kids will know these
are supposed to be light sabers?!" Kids are super blunt and let's just say
I have been a tad sensitive lately.
Nope, they totally knew what they were supposed to be.
Oh that 5-year-old imagination, how I miss it.

Here's a couple more photos she snapped that day!
Pool noodles for light sabers?? Helloooo creative!
Princess Leia Buns
Singing Happy Birthday to Kohen!

Kristen said the party was a total success and is her little boy
too stinkin cute or what??

Also, did I mention I received the best compensation EVER?

A Lilly travel mug in my FAVORITE pattern- Dirty Shirley!
annddddddd

Accessories for treats ANY DAY OF THE WEEK!
Maybe I should make a sign??
"WILL WORK FOR STATEMENT NECKLACES"

Anyway, you will probably see a few improvements around
here in the next few weeks- ohhhh I don't know?
Maybe a new blog name? :)
I just need to find someone who can help me out with a blog design!
Annnyyyyy advice on who rocks ?

4th of July Flag Cake & other festivities

Happy 4th of July!
Hope everyone had an awesome 4th! We sure did :)
Despite the fact that 4th of July fell on a WEDNESDAY this year!
How weird was that??

This week's festivities consisted of:

The Flag Cake
Ok so the flag cake.
As soon as I saw this on Pinterest I was like-
makiinngg thatttt!

So let me walk you through this mess of a process-

*First you separate your cake batter into 3- a red, a white and a blue.
You're going to be baking 3 different cakes here.
I used a 6" round cake pan but it's  way easier if you use an 8".
Start with the red and the white cake.
*Once they are cooled, slice them in half.
*Place one of the red halves on top of the white half, frosting in between.
*Next, once the blue cake is cooled, cut out a circle in the center of the cake.
*Place the blue cake ring on top of the red layer, again, frosting in between.
*Finally, cut a circle out of the center of each, the red and the white
cake, and place them in the center of the blue cake.

Vodka Watermelon
*note Jake in the background

THIS I have never done before!
I thought that literally all you do is slice up watermelon
and let it soak in tupperware for a few hours.
That's one way of doing it, but the watermelon get
gross apparently. So, armed with my large watermelon,
bottle of Vodka and my serrated watermelon knife-
I thought I was all ready to rock.
Not so much.
Bryan, after first watching me struggle to even cut the "cork"
out of the center of the watermelon, decided to step in.
I wont take credit for this. =/

Disappearing Island- New Smyrna Beach
Disappearing Island by New Smyrna was a recent discovery for us!
Bry & I went out there for the first time last Saturday and then
decided to load up the boat again for the 4th.
Constantly moving and re-anchoring the boat was irritating
but the little island itself is awesome.
Possible new favorite spot?!

Jake
We totally brought Jake out on the boat with us :)
We never bring him out when we fish because he jumps in after our bobbers.
This is not a joke.
He will literally launch himself overboard because he thinks it's a toy.
So we got him a little life jacket (which conveniently calms him down)
and brought em along!

There was so many other 4th of July things that I
wanted to try this year but just never got around to them..
..but I was super happy with the way that the flag cake turned out!

Bryan's birthday is only a few days away!
Check back for Jack Daniels cupcakes!

Father's Day Cake for Daddy-O!

How appropriate for Father's Day:

I love Father's Day because its a RELAXING holiday.
Not that Mother's Day isn't relaxing... well actually, this
past Mother's Day was anything but relaxing. I took Mom to see Tom Petty
at Amway in Orlando. Funnn!

We usually do a grill out or something with my brother (who is also a Father- WHOOP!)
and his family. With my nephew, Alex's, birthday so close to Father's Day this
year, we celebrated both on the same day. What does that mean to you ?

2 postings in one- yay!

This year for Father's Day I wanted to do something a
little different. His gifts over the past few years have ranged anywhere from the
Noodle golf balls that he swears enable him to golf like a pro :/ to the
infamous Levi "pocket" shirts that he can't seem to get enough of, to gift baskets full of his fave foods. He's definitely not the "tie" type! To be honest, I think I've
only seen my Dad in a tie a handful of times. I mean a necktie is to Father's Day
what flowers are to Mother's Day. Not very original. It was actually
hard to find a card, or anything for that matter, that didn't have a stupid tie on it.

Neck Ties for Chex Mix!

Neck Ties for Coke bottles!

Neck Tie Tablescape! (Ok this one is super cute...)

Again, these ideas would be cute
if my father wore a tie more than twice a year.

My Dad DOES love his Harley! He's had his bike for a few years
now and loves takin that thing out. He doesn't wear chaps
and leather vests or anything- it's not that serious. But he does wear a lot
of Harley tees. He must have mentioned to my Mom that
he wanted an Orlando Harley Davidson shirt, so I kinda took
that idea and ran with it... ;)

Last year I made him a "Grill Cake" which I refuse to post
pictures of because the thing turned out to be kind of a disaster.
It was sloppy but he thought that was the coolest thing! So this year,
I decided to make a Harley Davidson cake!

Black fondant seemed a little morbid at first but it came
together and ended up looking pretty neat...

Again, I have been making fondant cakes
like crazy this month!!

Oh also! Here's something cute I saw on Pinterest!
I have tons and tons of cupcake liners. I use to store them all in a trifle
next to my stove (another Pinterest idea) but I started to get a little
messy while cooking and I ended up getting pasta sauce everywhere - not
a practical idea. I needed something with a lid. The mason jar only
stores about a third of the liners that I actually have but looks cute!

So again, I was a crazy girl in the kitchen with 2 different cake
batters going at once. Taking one cake out of the oven- putting in Alex's
cupcakes.

Jake was even getting a little exhausted watching me.

My nephew was turning 8 and reeaalllyyyy wanted "Ninjago"
cupcakes. When Ashley first asked me to make these I totally played it cool and was like
"Ohhh yeah Ninjago! Yep, I can do that!" All the while I'm secretly thinking...
"Who is Ninjago??"

Thank God for GOOGLE!

So Ninjagos are basically exactly what they sound like.
Ninja Legos.... duh.

They can clearly be denoted by the "Lego yellow" face with the
evil looking Ninja eyebrows.

There was quite literally frosting all over my kitchen by the end
of this day. I made yellow and red for the cupcakes and whatever was left over I combined
to make orange frosting for my Dad's cake!

So YAY for that working out!

I started by only applying a little bit of the yellow frosting to the cooled
cupcake for the strip. Once that set, I went back and used my frosting gun
for the rectangle shape around the face with the red frosting. Then I applied red
frosting all around the rectangle. Finally, I used what was left of
the black fondant from my Dad's cake for the eye balls and eye brows.

Kind of "Ninjago-y" looking right ??

Alex loved them :)
Happy Birthday kiddo!
